English Department was established on the same day along with the College in 4th July, 1945. Since then it has been integral part of the College which has grown and become a fulcrum of education, socio-economic, political and cultural currents and cross currents in Nalbari and Assam. To begin with, it was a one-man Department, manned by the founder Principal, Troilokya Nath Goswami, and catered to the needs of I.A. classes. The faculty number of the Department rose to two in 1949 when Gopikesh Chakraborty from Bengal joined to teach the newly opened Degree classes. Honours classes were introduced in 1966. When Science stream was opened in 1958 and the responsibility of teaching the science students was taken by the Department.
The Department has been fortunate to get thousands of students who have come to the College during these seventy-four years, as alumni because English is a compulsory subject. Many of them have excelled in various fields such as arts, literature, science, technology, sports, social service, politics, education and civil service. If we go by the narrowed down idea of alumni as those who have offered English as the main or Honours (Major) subject, the number runs into hundreds of which many have proved and established themselves in different areas, especially teaching, writing, civil service and self-employment. The Department is seriously engaged in the task of augmenting its image and strength with a view to making the study of literature and language interesting and relevant.
Physical Space of the Department
For the proper existence and functioning of an academic department, space is of vital importance. Catering to a core subject, pressure of students always remained high for us, leading to a mismatch between needs and availability. But of late, things have changed for the better. Now we have seven (07) rooms for the exclusive use of the students and teachers of the Department.
PG – Two classrooms
One library cum reading room (‘KUBER NATH RAY LIBRARY’)
One teacher’s common room cum office (common to UG classes)
UG (Major) – Two classrooms
One library cum reading room
Besides the above there are seven other more spacious rooms that the Department shares with other departments as per the general routine.
Seema Biswas Centre for Films and Performing Arts
Keeping in view the rich cultural heritage of Nalbari and the immense possibilities of career prospects in the art of theatre, the Seema Biswas Centre for Films and Performing Arts was opened in the year 2017 to acquaint and train the students, and also enable them to perform different activities.
