Department of Geography:
It was the fine morning of 4th July, 1945, when Nalbari College was founded. Originally this College was under the affiliation of the Calcutta University and after the establishment of Gauhati University in 1948, it came under this University’s Jurisdiction.
In 1954, commercial geography was introduced in IA course. At that time up to 1955 the subject was taught by a teacher of economics department and from 1956 to 1960 it was taught by a teacher of commerce. As a result of the change of syllabus by the Gauhati University in 1961, the two year intermediate courses were abolished and one year pre-university courses were introduced. As per the new structure of the university syllabus, the Commercial geography was incorporated in the commerce stream and for both Arts & Science streams new geography syllabus was introduced.
The geography subject got its own identity in 1961. In that syllabus the subject was taught without practical paper in the pre- university course. This course was continued up to 1971 and was taught by a teacher from commerce. In 1972, the university syllabus was again structurally changed and one year pre- university course was abolished and two year pre-university courses were introduced with practical. Hence, the Geography Department has got its own identity in this college practically from 1972. In this year a new teacher purely from geography joined and the department of Geography gradually improved its status. In 1984, the two year degree general courses were opened in the department and subsequently the department was endowed with major courses in 1987.
Since 1972, the sites of the department have been changed four times starting from Biology, Chemistry, N.C.C. building (Now P.G. building), New Building which was allotted in1987 to present Position in Buniad Building. At present students from both the Arts & Science streams are studying the subject in higher secondary and Undergraduate Degree courses.
