Department of Botany, Nalbari College, Nalbari- 781335, Assam

About the Department:
Realizing the importance of science education in post – independence India, the science stream was introduced in Nalbari College in 1958. As plant science is one of the basic sciences, the subject of Botany was introduced into the science stream in 1962. The major course in the subject was introduced in 1986. From the day of its existence, the department has been actively engaged in the growth of the college and contributed consistently to the academic and socioeconomic status in the lower Brahmaputra valley. The department endeavors high standards in academic performance and social responsibility from its early days. The Department provides a vibrant environment for scientific learning, research, and development in the areas having socioeconomic importance. The arrangement of regular training programs in vermicomposting and mushroom cultivation by the department paved new doors for the students and unemployed youth to become self-reliant economically. Similarly, the age-old department of the college builds the required infrastructure for providing skill development courses like Biofertilizer technology, Nursery and gardening, mushroom cultivation technology, and herbal technology for undergraduate students. The department has built an ecosystem of academic excellence, which is reflected in the consistency of good results among the students and the engagement of the departmental alumni in higher studies. The Alumni of the department have successfully established themselves in the professional world in academics as well as in various government and corporate sectors.

Aims & Objective:
(a) To develop holistic academic approaches to enhance the subject knowledge among the students.
(b) To develop a linkage between science and nature.
(c) To upthrust the basic skills of plant identification and their economic importance among the local people.
(d) To acquaint the students with the latest trends and techniques in the field of Botany.
(e) To decipher quality education and prepare the students for the professional world.

Our vision is to emerge as a premier center of excellence in botanical education, research, and outreach, both regionally and nationally.

Mission:
1. Provide Quality Education: Deliver high-quality academic programs that equip students with a comprehensive understanding of plant biology, thereby preparing them for successful careers and lifelong learning.
2. Foster Research and Innovation: Foster a culture of research and innovation among faculty and students, promoting scholarly inquiry, scientific discovery, and the generation of new knowledge in botanical sciences.
3. Promote Environmental Awareness: Raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation, biodiversity preservation, and sustainable development through educational initiatives, outreach activities, and community engagement programs.
4. Empower Students: Empower students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to become critical thinkers, problem solvers, and ethical leaders in the field of botany and beyond.
5. Promote Indigenous Knowledge and Cultural Heritage: Recognize, respect, and promote indigenous knowledge systems, traditional ecological knowledge, and local cultural heritage, integrating them into the curriculum and research activities to enrich the learning experience and foster cultural sensitivity.

Facilities:
1. Well-equipped smart classrooms and laboratories to furnish the demand of undergraduate Honours and General courses.
2. The department has facilities to carry out practical-based research activities in Plant Taxonomy, Ecology, Plant Anatomy, Microbiology, Plant Physiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cytology and Plant Breeding.
3. Facility of Departmental Library with required numbers of textbooks and reference books.
4. Departmental museum with the collection of herbaria of important flora of the greater lower Brahmaputra valley.
5. Facility of Computer with internet connectivity.
6. Botanical garden to familiarize the students with the basics of plant identification.
