Profile


Departmental Profile
Since its inception in 1945, the Department of Philosophy has been a vital part of Nalbari College (in the beginning the college was Affiliated to Calcutta University, but later it was affiliated to Gauhati University). The department, led by our visionary founder, Bhabananda Dutta, has been delivering Pass Courses in philosophy at the undergraduate level and an HS (Arts) course. In 1982, the department expanded its offerings to include Major Course in philosophy, giving students a more in-depth and specialized understanding of the subject.
The Department has contributed to the overall growth of the college by providing a significant number of teachers to serve as Principal, Principal i/c, and Vice-Principal. They are:
1. Jagannath Chakraborty, MA, Head of the Department of Philosophy and Principal, served as principal of this college from 1983 to 1989.
2. Keshab Ch. Talukdar, MA, Head of the Department of Philosophy and Vice Principal, served as vice-principal of this college from 2000 to 2001.
3. Gitima Buzarbarua, MA, Head of the Department of Philosophy, Vice -Principal, served as vice-principal from 2019 to 2022. She also served as Principal i/c of this college from Feb. 2020 to Sept. 2020.
Our vision is to cultivate a profound understanding and appreciation of philosophy as a subject that investigates fundamental issues related to reality, knowledge, ethics, and human existence. Our aim is to give students the analytical and moral decision-making abilities they will need for lifelong learning, personal development, and ethical behaviour. Our ultimate objective is to foster a group of active thinkers who make important contributions to society and have a positive influence on the globe.
The mission of the Department of Philosophy is to provide a rigorous and complete education in Philosophy that fosters intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and a thorough understanding of human thought and experience. We aspire to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to analyze complicated philosophical problems, engage in intelligent dialogue, and acquire a well-rounded perspective on life\'s essential questions. We are dedicated to creating a welcoming and supportive learning atmosphere that fosters creativity, open-mindedness, and respect for all points of view.

Programmes & Curriculum
Presently the department of philosophy offers the following programmes
1. HS (Arts) Course in Logic & Philosophy (Curriculum is followed as given by AHSEC)
2. UG Course (BA) in Philosophy (Honours & Regular) under CBSE mode (Curriculum is followed as given by Gauhati University)
(The department will also offer Four Year UG Programmes in Philosophy from the Academic Session 2023-24.)

Departmental Magazine
“Darshan Mukuta (দৰ্শন মুকুতা)”, the department\'s annual wall magazine, plays a vital role in highlighting the talent, achievements, and creative works of the students within the department. By providing a platform for students to showcase their skills and accomplishments, the magazine fosters a strong sense of community and celebration among the department members. It serves as a medium through which students can inspire and support each other, creating a collaborative and encouraging environment that further enhances their artistic and academic journeys. The department also intends to start publishing the wall magazine in handwritten form starting with the upcoming edition.

World Philosophy Day
The Department of Philosophy, Nalbari College celebrated World Philosophy Day since 2020, on the third Thursday of November. On this day, the department organized a talk show on a specific philosophical topic. The department will also prepare a handwritten magazine entitled “Īkṣaṇa (ঈক্ষণ)” which will be inaugurated on world philosophy day from this year.
